Today is the day when things finally came together. Although I had been up early helping make sure cars were removed from the street, moving my table onto the pavement and collecting a bulk order of sausages from the local butcher, it was not until 11.30 that it was time to put out my cupcakes. We had pleasant weather but there was a strong breeze and I had to tape my cake stand down to the table with masking tape covered with matching pink pencil. Then I had to cut a circle the size of the base into the middle of a paper table cloth and poke the stand through the hole. Fortunately this worked well.
Then it was the moment of truth, arranging my cupcakes on the tiers and best of all putting my Big Lunch white chocolate cake with marzipan letters on the top. There were the perfect number of cupcakes to fill all the tiers and I was very pleased to hear lots of compliments – though admittedly as many of these were about the pink cake stand as the cakes!
I was so happy with the result I even uploaded a picture to the BBC website (who had an area for Big Lunch photos) and they have published it here on their Big Lunch top story page where it will remain in their archives probably forever. So my first big occasion cake is recorded for all eternity!
